Long and Natural Hair

The Hair Growers Handbook

The following book has been written to be helpful with every aspect of  growing or maintaining long hair and gives the reader a unique combination  of knowledge. It is the first book to directly focus hair-care advice and  scientific awareness towards long hair. The many aspects of the craft of dressing long hair are included along with the meanings that people and their cultures have found in letting hair grow.

Our bodies make our hair unconsciously; consciously we decide on its welcome. With full appreciation, its welcome is gentle and its increased  length may be handled with pleasure.  Hair is free; it arises from our living inheritance, which gives it an innately personal character.
Hair grows from the health of a body and is particularly vulnerable to ill    health, pollution, radiation, and also stress.

It is a very personal aspect of nature. The appreciation of hair without reaching for processing equipment means that caring for hair can be about nurturing rather than alteration, and this may have the broader effect of putting hair culture in the context of nature appreciation. When someone takes an interest in growing better hair, they may think more about their health, relaxation, what they eat, and the kind of things they put on themselves.

Hair growth may be a small aspect of nature and of human health, but it is a very visual aspect and it offers everyday reminders and interactions.  Hair seen in the context described in this book can be a starting point for greater personal awareness. Of course there are many other ways of approaching this, but hair can offer an unforgettable association that leads into more important health and environmental matters.

At the image level, greater length can give more versatility. Long hair can be put up, braided or let down.  When it's out loose, it moves around into a variety of positions, sometimes in front, perhaps down one side or both and sometimes flowing behind, either in part or as a whole. The positions of strands are always changing. This book covers how to grow and care for long hair, and they may also increase the reader's understanding of their body and its health, food, herbs, nature, culture, politics, history, religions, relationships and pleasure.

Neil Longman, the author of the book, has researched in environmental science, studied widely and also helped many people grow their hair for most of his adult life.

Neil Longman is also the author of all the pictures used in the book
